1.  Technical Training Policy

National policy on all technical training has changed to spread it out over a longer period.  The main changes are that cadets should now take one subject on each examination sitting (unless they joined late and are catching up) and the minimum age at which the Staff Cadet Part 1 can be taken increases to 16 from 1st April 08.  The main aim is to avoid having examination training on every parade night during the winter months. In this Wing, examinations are now held on the first Monday (or next nearest parade night) in November, February and April.

2.  First Class Training

There is no change to the subjects taken for First Class examinations, but you should at your earliest convenience move away from using the computerised examination system.  Good training has always been best received when it is more practical rather than powerpoint based - just because people learn better that way - and so new forms have been devised to allow the teacher to record an observed practical event that demonstrates learning.  The current assessment forms are in ACP20a ACTI 25 Annex A.  A copy of page 1 and page 2 are available here.  Three subjects, the History of Flight, ATC and RAF are not now examined at all.

To teach History of Flight there is an good widely available DVD
called "History of Flight" which is narrated by Tom Baker. It is best served up in half hour slices, but it covers everything in our syllabus and continues well beyond it up to the modern day. You can pick this up from ebay for only a few pounds.

The ATC ACP contains a generic hierarchy for the Corps, but this should be trained as a customised subject showing our own Wing and Region structure listing the people involved. A powerpoint lesson on this is available here (3.5Mb).

To help you train RAF ranks, here is a handout.

3.  BTECs

BTEC in Aviation Studies

The BTEC in Aviation Studies will be centrally funded by the Corps with effect from 1st April 2008.  Any requests received between now and the 1st April will be held unless you specifically request it to be processed now and provide the fee.

To apply, just send a copy of the blue examination record to Wing HQ.  Certificates will normally be returned to you within a month.  Retrospective claims are permissible for serving cadets only.

An "Award in Aviation Studies" (for completion of Leading exams) is equivalent to 1 Science GCSE, and a "Certificate in Aviation Studies" (for completion of Staff Part 1 exams) is equivalent to 2 Science GCSEs.

BTEC First Diploma in Public Services

An application form and information on this are available on the CVQO web site http://www.cvqo.org/  Do not apply direct to CVQO, but send the completed application to WIng Vocational Qualifications Officer via Wing HQ.  Direct registration means that we will not know you have registered until many months later, and so you will not be invited to the workshop to help you complete the project and workbook because we do not know about you. The best time to register is May / June when the syllabus revisions have taken place and a new application form is published. A notice will be put into Wing Routine Orders when the new application form becomes available.

4.  Small Arms Training Team courses

The complete list of Weapons Instructor, Coaching and Range Conducting Officer courses avialable in 2008 is available here.  Send the completed application form to Wing HQ.
